In 2013, a group of friends got together and thought it would be great to create a marathon for the Acadiana area. Roughly 11 months later, the inaugural year of Zydeco Marathon took place in 2014. Running strong, the 5th Annual Zydeco Marathon will take place on March 4th, 2018. The event will host over 2,000 runners and spectators, some of which travel here from across the country.
The race starts in Downtown Lafayette and covers some great parts of the city. Departing from downtown, you’ll head to the Cajun Field area, then head back downtown via the Saint Streets, once through the downtown again, you’ll dash through the University of Louisiana campus and the beautiful Bendel Garden neighborhood (which every runner loves, for obvious reasons). After clearing Bendel Gardens, you’ll make it back through the Oil Center and UL Campus. At about that point the half marathoners make their way back downtown to the finish line, and the full marathoners continue their mission, which takes them on an out and back, spanning to the River Ranch neighborhood, running through the East Bayou area. Course Maps can be found here: FULL HALF
Along with the Full 26.2-mile & Half 13.1-mile distances, there is also a relay option available for both distances. A team of 4 runners for the full, and a 2 runner team for the half. This provides for a fun way to participate in the race, while spreading the workload across the team. So, grab a few running friends and get signed up.
Finish Line Festival
After the race, the party continues at the finish line festival at Parc International Downtown, where Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band will be headlining for the 4th straight year. The finish line festival will feature some of the best local food that Cajun country has to offer.
The 2018 event brought about the welcomed sponsorship of Lafayette General, and a major part of that gives participants the option to raise money for infants undergoing NICU care at Lafayette General Medical Center. Funds raised by charity runners will support two of Lafayette General Foundation’s programs, NICU Rocks & NicView. Charity runners get free registration, and qualify for extra prizes based on fundraising level. More information can be found here: MORE
The Zydeco Marathon has become a welcomed addition to the annual spectrum of events in the area’s entertainment and recreational portfolio. A combination of athletic endurance, hospitality, Cajun food & zydeco music provides for a one of a kind experience that fits right in with the culture of Acadiana.
