Every day I’m fortunate to meet people from all varieties of life. Without fail, at least once daily, a patient tells me that they’ve been evaluated in the past and were told that everything was normal, or to take another medication, and they’re frustrated and convinced that they’re “just crazy.” It’s a running joke in our office that I’m going to embroider the words “You’re not crazy!” on my lab coat. After we share a laugh, I’m able to explain it’s probably highly unlikely and chances are they are simply hormonally unbalanced.
While there is always the potential for a complicated solution, often times significant symptom relief can be as simple as optimizing vitamin levels, nutrition intake, exercise and, of course, different hormonal systems. Making a few small changes can make all the difference in the world. When evaluating the common list of complaints such as; fatigue, irritability, low libido, lack of motivation and poor sleep, to name a few, I often suggest that after a detailed history and physical we start by completing some basic lab work. In some patients, we evaluate with more extensive bloodwork, utilize specialty tests to measure micronutrition, neurotransmitter levels or inflammatory markers, perform exercise testing and even salivary testing.
